Quadriga of Charlemagne

Byzantine, 8th century 
Silk, 75 x 72.5 cm

This silk quadriga comes from reliquary of Charlemagne at Aachen Chapel. It has an image of a victorious charioteer at the Hippodrome in Constantinople. According to tradition, this fabric possibly served to cover the remains of the body of Charlemagne.
