Basilica of St. John Lateran (Rome)
Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano

The Basilica of St. John Lateran (San Giovanni in Laterano) is the site of the first church built by Constantine the Great. Its name derives from a Roman family Laterani given to the neighborhood by the fourth century AD. The church was built by Constantine during the pontificate of Pope Sylvester (314-335) who was the first pope to use it as his cathedral. During this time, it was dedicated to the Savior. The nearby baptistery (San Giovanni in Fonte) was also built at this time. By the time it underwent another major restoration, by Pope Hadrian I (772-795), it had been rededicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. It received many rich papal gifts and underwent several repairs and minor additions throughout the centuries. It remained more or less in its original state until an earthquake in 896 caused the nave to collapse. Several fires, the worst of which was in 1308, also caused extensive damage. These disasters wsd followed by series of rebuilding, additions, redecoration and repairs until the definitive remodeling by Borromini under Pope Innocent X (1644-55), which created the present church. Excavations were carried out beneath the church in the 1930, and 1950s, the latter of which located most of the Constantinian foundation walls, enabling an accurate reconstruction of the original basilica plan to be made. The central bronze doors in the facade are the original Roman bronze doors from du Curia in the Forum. At the left end of the portico is a Roman statue of Constantine. Although the church was extensively remodeled it has retained in original plan of a nave flanked by two aisles on both sides, and ending in a semicircular apse to the west.
